KEY STAGE 3 PHSYICAL EDUCATION
Our intent for Physical Education as a core subject is to provide every student with learning experiences that have relevance and meaning beyond just practical performance and sports skills. We aim to develop people, not just athletes and our core PE curriculum intends to support holistic personal development, well-being, and learning for life.
In order to deliver this aim, our Core PE curriculum is designed around four specific areas of learning under the umbrella heading of ‘ME in PE’. Everything we deliver in Core PE is based around one or more of these four areas:
- PHYSICAL ME
- THINKING ME
- SOCIAL ME
- MINDSET ME
Through Physical Education we seek to help children develop a range of life skills and attributes including confidence, resilience, adaptability, teamwork, and leadership, all of which are very important for an individual to succeed and maximise their potential in their academic studies.
All students participate in more than two hours of Physical Education every week and in addition to this there is a programme of activities and clubs offered to students before school, at lunch time and after school. Competitive sport opportunities are plentiful with a well-established schedule of inter-house competitions plus inter-school fixtures and tournaments competing against other schools in Slough and throughout Berkshire.
KEY STAGE 4 PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Core PE in Years 10 and 11 is a vital part of students’ curriculum experience. We want students to have a positive and enjoyable experience of physical activity because we want them to lead a physically active lifestyle once they leave school. Research has shown that negative experiences of school PE have led to disengagement with exercise in adulthood for many people.
Providing students with different activity options each half-term promotes personal responsibility and supports engagement / participation.
Practical core PE lessons in Key Stage 4 support physical and emotional health, but also build on the foundation of ‘ME in PE’ from Key Stage 3 to highlight and develop a range of desirable employability skills. For example, personal responsibility, leadership, working effectively as a team, and positive communication.
In Years 10 and 11, all students participate in more than two hours of Core Physical Education every week just as in they do in Key Stage 3.
Students who choose to study examination PE at Key Stage 4 follow one of three possible courses. These are GCSE PE, the BTEC First Award in Sport or the OCR Cambridge National Certificate in Sports Studies. The course each cohort follows is chosen based on the students in the class in relation to the different demands of each course. This is intended to help each cohort achieve their best possible outcomes in Year 11.
Examination PE courses are delivered in three additional lessons to the Core PE curriculum.
KEY STAGE 5 PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In Years 12 and 13 we deliver the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport. This qualification is equivalent to one A-Level.
